Birkenhead is a town at the Mersey estuary in England, on the Wirral peninsula. Historically part of Lancashire, Birkenhead was incorporated as a separate municipality in 1877.

Birkenhead is perhaps best known for the Ship Building Industry which once dominatedthe town and indeed the whole of the North West of England. The main ferry port fortravel to Ireland from Great Britain is located here and there are still many tall shipson view in the docks. The town has undergone much redevelopment in recent yearshowever and now boasts a number of tourist attractions, including the popular Port Sunlight Village Museum which celebrates the history of one of Birkenhead’s mostfamous former residents, William Lever. There are also a number of art galleries andmuseums, as well as a selection of parks and open spaces. Birkenhead is also home toone of the UK’s largest shopping centres – Pyramids Shopping Centre.

Birkenhead has good transport links to the rest of the country, with both rail androad connections to nearby Liverpool and beyond. The town is also served byLiverpool John Lennon Airport, which is located just over the River Mersey inLiverpool.
