Ashton-in-Makerfield

The village of Ashton-in-Makerfield is a small community in the valley of the River Tame, just south of Wigan and five miles north east of Manchester. It has been an important centre for over 1000 years.

Since it’s founding, Ashton-in-Makerfield has had many different names such as ‘Aesctun’ or Æscetone,’ ‘Aescetuna,’ and most famously, ‘Ashton.’ However, it was not until 1226 that its name became formalized to what we know today.
