Dean Mills (site of)

The remains of Bazley and Gardner’s 1838 ‘Dean Mills’ at Barrow Bridge.

A bit difficult to access with no public footpath but the site can be seen from the gate by the bus stop. Quite overgrown and not much to see except for a few low walls and rubble marking the outlines of the buildings.

One point-of-interest is the crumbling base of a chimney that is shown on the old OS maps. Another chimney stood on the higher ground to the back of the site, but this is a grassy field today. If you wanted to be picky, you could say this is the real Barrow Bridge Chimney – the other one being associated with Halliwell.

Dean Mills closed in 1877

There was an earlier, water powered mill here, built by the sons of Robert Lord in 1794 and known as Dean Mill. This was situated on the other side of the bus terminus on ground later occupied by the later mill.
