Raikes Clough Colliery (site of)

The site of an old coal pit and colliery beside the River Croal in Bolton.

The colliery operated from possibly as early as the 18th Century and closed sometime in the late 19th Century. The colliery was just downstream of the weir on the Croal, on the Bolton side, where the main shaft was located.

The coal here is not far below ground, found around 9 metres below, together with collapsed mine workings at the nearby Raikes Bridge and less than 4 metres below by the river.

Not much remains of the old mine buildings today, but there was a small, brick chimney-looking structure to the north that marks the ventilation shaft for the mines. The structure had been dug open by machine around 2018 and the narrow, open shaft exposed.
