Hyde War Memorial

The Grade II War Memorial on Werneth Low stands as a solemn testament to the brave souls who gave their lives for a greater purpose. Dedicated on the 25th of June, 1921, this obelisk structure is made of enduring granite, surrounded by iron railings that add a touch of elegance to the historic monument. The banded rustication on its base not only enhances its grandeur but also carries a poignant inscription that serves as a reminder of the profound sacrifices made by the soldiers: “They willingly left the unachieved purpose of their lives in order that all life should not be wrenched from its purpose”. At the rear, a plaque is carefully placed, which commemorates those who served and fell during the 1939-45 war, ensuring that their contributions are never forgotten. Adding to the monument’s distinction is a bronze coat of arms, symbolizing honor, courage, and resilience.

The railings, while plain, are accentuated with corner wreaths – a delicate yet powerful gesture to honor the fallen. Perched on a hill, the memorial offers a commanding view overlooking Hyde, allowing visitors a quiet moment of reflection as they take in the vast landscape, imbuing them with a sense of reverence and gratitude towards the heroes of the past.
