Horwich

Horwich is a former industrial town in northwest Bolton at the foot of the West Pennine Moors. In fact Horwich is almost like two towns, the old town to the west was centered around the parish church as Horwich Chapel is an old name for the town, which spread as far as Horwich Crown, and the later industrial town located towards Lostock to the east, which was built to house the workforce for the massive loco works and associated industries.

Horwich was also home to the cotton industry, particularly the bleaching proces to which it was particularly suited due to the many streams providing water for the bleaching process and water power until steam engines took over.

Horwich is still a town of two halves as the old section remains much the same and the role of the loco works has been taken over by the Middlebrook retail complex and surrounding business parks. Also home to the ever-popular Bolton Wanderers stadium.
