The Leeds and Liverpool Canal passes through quiet rural areas after Burnley and before entering Wigan with good towpaths for walking.
There are sections of open views across the rural landscape with the West Pennines rising in the background and shaded woodland areas with small nature reserves and ruins to explore just off the towpath.
This is said to be one of the quietest sections of canal network for traffic but it’s usually possible to see a few boats making their way up and down.
